Martin has been involved in the power and renewables industry in one form or another since 2002. After obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Nottingham University, he worked for energy majors for ten years before turning to loss adjusting in 2016. In 2020, Martin joined Renewable Energy Loss Adjusters (RELA) as Technical Director and, after successfully growing the practice, both RELA and Martin joined forces with Crawford in September 2024.
His experience includes assessing losses in the UK, Europe, LATAM and the Middle East. In addition to handling significant wind, solar, battery energy storage systems and business interruption losses, Martin also has extensive experience in risk engineering and the risk appraisal of power-generating assets. His wider experience includes conventional power risks and Construction All Risks.
With this background, it’s no surprise that Martin’s ambition is to continue to focus on the technical aspects of renewable energy. “There’s no doubt that we can demonstrate breadth-and-depth knowledge of the sector,” explains Martin. “When we joined Crawford, we brought with us a database of around 3,000 renewable energy claims and all the valuable learning that goes with it. From that solid base, and with the resources of the wider Crawford business, I now want to start building a team of technical experts – recruited from within the industry or academia – whose depth of sector knowledge can be enhanced with insurance and loss adjusting skills.”
Martin wants to take this technical-skills-led approach because it’s technology that drives the renewables sector – and at considerable pace. “Just when you think a peak has been reached in terms of available technology,” adds Martin, “there’s suddenly something newer, bigger or faster that’s capable of delivering an order-of-magnitude leap in clean energy generation. By comparison, the principles of insurance tend to evolve more slowly, so it’s important that Crawford continues to focus on technological know-how as the key to achieving and maintaining a pre-eminent position in the renewable energy sector.”
But in addition to loss adjusting, Martin also has plans to continue building Crawford’s best-of-breed offering in surveying and risk assessment for the renewables arena, too.
“Our experience and robust claims database don’t just put us in the best position to understand the mechanisms of claims after the damage has occurred,”
Martin explains.
“Given the speed at which new technology is being installed and brought online, our services are also available for surveying and risk consulting. Brokers and insurers will need reassurance that new-build resources, wherever they are in the world, are not only fit for renewable energy generating purposes, but are as risk-free as humanly possible, too.”
