At Crawford, our people are the difference and Philip Meyerdierks is a great example of how expertise, curiosity and customer focus come together to drive results. With 17 years of experience in insurance subrogation, Philip brings both strategic insight and hands-on problem solving to his role.
What Philip does
As an account executive, Philip is responsible for managing, retaining and expanding relationships with client partners. He works closely with clients to identify service opportunities that help them exceed recovery goals while strengthening the effectiveness of their subrogation departments. At the heart of his work is a commitment to helping clients recover more while delivering an experience that policyholders remember for the right reasons.
Busting myths and sharing insight
One of the biggest misconceptions Philip encounters is the idea that subrogation departments function like collection agencies. In reality, he sees subrogation as one of the most powerful customer service tools an insurer can have. Few things improve policyholder satisfaction more than receiving a returned deductible check.
When it comes to trends in the industry, Philip points to the growing reliance on artificial intelligence. While he sees real value in AI when applied thoughtfully, he cautions against overdependence without fully understanding the models being used. In his view, technology should support subrogation, not replace the critical thinking and conversations that lead to the best outcomes.
If Philip could automate one part of the process, it would be data entry. Beyond that, he believes meaningful dialogue and investigation are where the real value lies.
Lessons from the field
One of the most complex cases Philip worked on early in his career involved a workers’ compensation claim where an employee fell through the roof of a warehouse. What initially appeared straightforward quickly became complicated when multiple safety and mechanical failures were uncovered. That experience taught him a lesson he still carries today: never underestimate the impact of contributing factors.
For anyone just starting out in subrogation, Philip describes the field as exciting, challenging and rewarding. He jokes that subrogation professionals are the bounty hunters of the insurance industry, tracking down responsible parties and holding them accountable within policy limits.
Leadership style and motivation
Philip’s leadership strength lies in recognizing the unique skillsets of his coworkers and bringing them together in a way that elevates the whole team. When cases get challenging, he reminds his team that complexity is what makes the work interesting.
He compares subrogation to solving a difficult Sudoku puzzle. The easy ones are quick to finish, but the challenging puzzles that make the effort worthwhile. The same is true of complex recoveries where persistence pays off.
One lesson from a mentor continues to guide him: always put yourself in the customer’s shoes. No matter what you are selling or delivering, people remember how the experience made them feel.
Philip’s passion for subrogation, thoughtful leadership and client-first mindset make him a valued partner to clients and a trusted teammate at Crawford.
