Updates

Feb 09, 2023

The death toll from the two major earthquakes which struck Turkey and Syria on Monday continues to rise, while damaging aftershocks affect the region. Over 19,000 deaths in the two countries have been reported as of 9 February, with this number set to increase markedly as search and rescue operations reach more of the devastated towns and cities.

In Turkey, the impact area extends across approximately 10 percent of the country, with ten of the region’s major cities badly affected. As reported previously, these cities include Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir and Kilis with many buildings totally destroyed or with significant cracking to external structures and partial collapses.

Access to the affected regions continues to be limited to the emergency services and rescue crews. The infrastructure has been severely damaged, with many roads currently impassable, while ports and airports have also been impacted. In addition, the telecommunications network in some areas has been disrupted.

Crawford’s partner loss adjusting company in the region, Alesta, is monitoring developments closely. The team is one of the most experienced in Turkey and is able to use its established network to gather information as it becomes available, while its specialists prepare to deploy when access is granted.

The team is also liaising closely with clients domiciled in the region as well as international clients with assets in the country, working in tandem with Crawford’s global network to ensure communication is maintained as the situation develops and more information becomes available.

Teams from across Crawford’s international network are being mobilised to provide immediate on-the-ground assistance when possible. Given the scale of the loss and range of industries impacted, expertise is being drafted in from multiple parts of Crawford, including Crawford Global Technical Services and Crawford Forensic Accounting Services.

While a number of notifications have been received by Crawford at this time, this number is expected to increase considerably over the coming weeks.

Efforts will be coordinated at both the international and local level to ensure the speediest possible response as we work to help the individuals, businesses and communities that have been devastated by the tragic loss.

Feb 06, 2023

At least 1,500 people have been killed after two powerful earthquakes struck Turkey and Syria within the space of 12 hours. The earthquake was felt in four countries - Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Israel.

Many hundreds of people are still believed to be trapped under rubble, and the toll is expected to rise as rescue workers continue to search mounds of wreckage in cities and towns across the area. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this terrible event.

There will be thousands of residential property claims but we believe that the vast majority of them will be handled by the Turkish Catastrophe Insurance Pool. There has also been considerable destruction of industrial and commercial properties.

Crawford ready to restore

Our network partners and their families in Turkey are all unharmed.

Our response plan status has been activated and we have taken steps to ensure we can respond to both local and multinational clients with property in the area. We are looking to mobilise people and increase capacity in the affected area, if appropriate.

The priority at this stage is the search and rescue response so reports of the areas affected are limited, but we believe the worst affected cities are Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir and Kilis with many buildings totally destroyed or significant cracking to external structures and partial collapses.

Our adjusting team in the country, who are from one of the oldest and largest loss adjusting and surveying companies in Turkey, advise that the risk of aftershocks is high, and access will only be granted to the affected areas once declared safe by the authorities. They are in contact with clients to provide advice and support at this very early stage.

Crawford Forensic Accounting Services teams are also on standby to assist with business interruption claims.
