Crawford responds to earthquake in Turkey
On Friday 30 October, an earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck the Seferihisar coast of the Aegean Sea causing considerable damage to the port city of Izmir in Turkey. The earthquake also impacted the Greece Island of Samos.
According to Turkey’s disaster and emergency agency, AFAD over 400 aftershocks have occurred since the earthquake, several of which have measured over 4.0 on the Richter scale. The death toll is currently reported to be in excess of 90 people with approximately 1,000 injured.
Crawford has mobilised its considerable loss adjusting capabilities in the region to help its clients address the multiple challenges created by the earthquake and associated tsunami and operates a team of six loss adjusters and four assistants in Izmir – all of whom are safe.
While onsite access is not possible for at least the next 72 hours due to continued aftershocks, the team is currently handling over 200 claims filings received from the local insurance market. The damage resulting from the event is primarily in the residential part of Izmir, with only minor damage reported to date in the industrial areas. There are also a number of major hotel chains located in and around Izmir. The claims received are related to property damage and marine cargo/hull losses.
Crawford has access to the largest team of loss adjusters in Turkey with over 110 employees operating across the region. We are currently in the process to seconding a number of members to our team in Izmir to bolster our onsite claims handling capabilities and to ensure that we can assess damage quickly and thoroughly once access to the affected areas is granted.
We continue to work closely with insurers and brokers operating in the affected regions to provide support to all parties and ensure a swift and speedy response. If you require further information on our response to the earthquake or should you need adjusting assistance, please contact a member of our team:
