Tropical Storm Pabuk ripped through southern Vietnam on Tuesday 1st January bringing with it both inland and coastal flooding. It continued to strengthen as it tracked across Cambodia, towards southern Thailand’s east coast, where rain, winds and surging seawater buffeted coastal villages and tourist resorts.
Tropical Storm Pabuk is forecast to make landfall on Friday evening in Nakhon Si Thammarat on Thailand's east coast and bring torrential rain and strong winds to more than a dozen provinces, including Surat Thani, home to the popular tourist islands of Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan.
The Meteorological Department said on Friday morning that winds were reaching 50 mph and that waves 10 to 16 feet high were possible in the Gulf of Thailand.
Thai authorities suspended ferry services in the Gulf of Thailand and flights to Nakhon Si Thammarat and Koh Samui were cancelled.
Widespread damage is anticipated to infrastructure, telecommunication, hotels, commercial properties, businesses and residences from the storm force winds and torrential rain as well as coastal flooding and landslides.
