The beginnings of this weather event were detected in the north Atlantic over the weekend by Spanish meteorologists, who named it Storm Herminia. While the storm front made its way across the majority of western Europe, it was Italy and France that were most heavily affected.

Parts of Italy were impacted by flash floods and high winds causing damage in towns and cities, with landslides blocking roads in more rural areas. Heavy snow has also been recorded in the Alpine region. 

Western France saw heavy rain and windspeeds of over 68mph (110kph), with red and orange weather warnings in place for possible storm surges in coastal areas in addition to flash flooding from swollen rivers further inland.

The authorities in both regions are urging people to be aware of weather alerts, warning of dangerous travel conditions caused by strong winds, heavy rain, and snow on higher ground.

Crawford and its network partners in France, Stelliant, are combining to engage the highest level of surge plans to deliver a breadth of resources across all the impacted areas. Stelliant has set up dedicated CAT procedures for Storm Herminia claims in Brittany.
