Loss assessments remain in the early stages and it is currently impossible to determine whether the overall impact of this event will exceed that of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.

The majority of losses are expected to arise from residential earthquake damage, although official estimates are not yet available. Early observations suggest the earthquake's epicentre was closer to residential areas of Kumamoto than the 2016 event, which may result in higher residential losses, but this remains speculative until more comprehensive data becomes available.

At this stage, direct property damage and BI losses within the commercial sector are not expected to be significant, although the full extent remains unknown. The potential impact of contingent business interruption stemming from supply chain and logistics disruption is also still being evaluated.

The broader (re)insurance market will be watching for emerging loss data over the coming weeks, particularly given the possibility that residential losses could exceed those experienced following the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.
