Delta To Make Landfall on Friday as Potential Category 3 Hurricane

Hurricane Delta, the sixth storm to threaten the Gulf Coast this season, is projected to make landfall along the Louisiana coast this evening as a potential Category 3 storm. Hurricane warnings are in effect for the coast of Louisiana, including Lake Charles and Morgan City; tropical storm warnings have been issued for Freeport, TX, New Orleans, LA and inland areas as far north as Monroe, LA. The worst of the storm could include winds of up to 115 mph and a storm surge of up to 11 feet. Excessive flooding is expected along the coast, and wind damage and power outages are likely to affect regions as far inland as Arkansas and Tennessee.

Hurricane Delta has strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane since it became a tropical depression on Sunday evening, the fastest intensification on record for the Atlantic Basin. The storm has made landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula and will reach the Gulf of Mexico by the week’s end. Experts expect the storm to continue to intensify before making landfall on the Gulf Coast by Friday, including winds of up to 120 mph, dangerous storm surges and heavy rain. Delta is likely to make landfall along the coast of Louisiana, though it is possible that the path may deviate slightly.
